#7. Meet the guy who built a community before immigrating
Plus: A little-known LMIA-exempt immigration pathway
Hello,
Summer is in, although Calgary doesn’t look summery yet. It’s been raining on and off. And weather forecast says we have more rain coming in the next few days.
In today’s newsletter: Oluwaseun Ayebiwo built a community before immigrating to Halifax.
Also: Matthew McDonald talks about migration being more than a one-way journey.
Plus: Veronica Sepehr and I break down the C-51 work permit.

Oluwaseun Ayebiwo moved to Canada with a ready-made community
For most immigrants (myself included), we wait till we get to our new country before we start the arduous task of building a new community.
The downside is we start with zero social capital, have no one to ask for advice when things get confusing (which they will), and find integration frustrating.
Not Oluwaseun.
This dude connected with 40+ people who were all moving to Nova Scotia from Lagos at the same time. They planned their trips together. Some of them even flew on the same aircraft. And they've been supporting each other ever since.

Migration is more than a one-way journey
There’s a lot to like about this piece by Matthew McDonald. But I think the biggest one for me is how most of the world is as similar as much as it’s different.
That sentence was a mouthful. Forgive me. But take a look at this paragraph:
“Given the number of citizens departing, one would expect an emptier city and a glut of available real estate. But while everyone understands that many of the newly built investment properties lie vacant, every speaker’s voice reveals astonishment in that property costs have tripled since the pandemic and that an apartment is increasingly out of reach for youth and the middle class.”
You could be talking about Canada, Nigeria, and a host of other countries in that paragraph.
P.S. It started raining again as I wrote this newsletter.
