Who’s Eligible to Keep Working After Submitting a PGWP Application?
Let's find out if you meet the right conditions.
Hello, I'd really like to grow this email list. If you enjoy this newsletter, it would mean the world to Jola and I if you encouraged one friend/fellow immigrant/colleague to subscribe…Very likely, the the only thing you will get in return is warm fuzzy feelings, and if I can attribute it to you, I’d personally send you a thank you email.
So, you’ve finished your study program, read all the congratulatory texts from family and friends back home, waved away the anxious thoughts of what’s next, and submitted your Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) application.
While Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) processes your application, you might still be able to keep working full-time (without a permit). But only if you meet all the right conditions.
You Can Work Under Section 186(w) If All the Following Apply:
You held a valid study permit at the time you applied for your PGWP
You submitted your PGWP application from inside Canada, before your study permit expired
You completed your program and are eligible for the PGWP
You were allowed to work off-campus during your studies and you didn’t exceed your authorized work hours
You remain in Canada while waiting for a decision
If all five apply, congratulations, you are authorized to work full-time under IRPR 186(w).
What If You Received the PGWP Work Authorization Letter (IMM 0127 E)?
This letter confirms that you’re authorized to work while awaiting a decision. But here’s an important detail:
The letter’s 180-day expiry date doesn’t override section 186(w)
Even if the letter expires, your authorization continues until IRCC decides unless your application is refused
You Must Stop Working If:
Your application is refused. The day you’re notified, you must stop working. There’s no grace period.
Common Missteps to Avoid
Working without authorization (e.g. applying late without valid study permit)
Starting a new job before eligibility kicks in (if you didn’t meet all required criteria)
Final Tip
Print your WP-EXT for PGWP (IMM 0127 E) letter or IRPR section 186(w) and keep it in your onboarding folder. It may save you from awkward payroll pauses or “we need to talk about…” emails from HR.
And if you're unsure whether your case fits the criteria, don’t guess. Speak to a licensed immigration consultant. This is one of the most misunderstood areas in the post-grad immigration process.
