Who’s Eligible For a Study Permit Extension in 2025?
The rules around extensions are rather strict.
Hello, I'd really like to grow this email list. If you enjoy this newsletter, it would mean the world to Jola and I if you encouraged one friend/fellow immigrant/colleague to subscribe…Very likely, the the only thing you will get in return is warm fuzzy feelings, and if I can attribute it to you, I’d personally send you a thank you email.
Your study permit can expire. And if that ever happens, the rules around extensions are strict. Plus the timelines aren’t exactly flexible.
Here’s what you need to know to stay on track and in status.
When Should You Extend Your Study Permit?
You must apply for a study permit extension before your current permit expires. But earlier is better, especially if your passport is close to expiring.
Keep in mind:
IRCC will not extend your study permit beyond your passport’s expiry date
If your program will take longer than expected, you must apply to extend your permit before it runs out
If you finish early, your permit expires 90 days after program completion or on the date printed on your permit, whichever comes first
What Documents Do You Need to Apply for an Extension?
You’ll need to upload the following documents that prove you’re still eligible to study, including:
A valid passport (with enough time left)
A letter of enrolment or a letter of acceptance (LOA) from your Designated Learning Institution (DLI)
Proof of academic progress (e.g. transcripts)
Proof of financial support (tuition + $20,635 per year, more if your family is with you). IRCC will assess whether you have enough money to continue to support yourself while you study in Canada.
Note: Your DLI must validate your LOA or letter of enrollment. If they don’t do it by IRCC’s deadline, your application will be returned and the fee refunded. Always confirm with your school before applying.
What Happens If You Apply On Time?
You get maintained status. This means:
You can continue studying under the same conditions as your previous permit
You must remain in Canada while waiting for IRCC’s decision
If You’re Changing Schools or Deferred a Term
Watch out for these risks:
If you’ve deferred your start date, you may need a new LOA and must submit a new extension application
As of January 22, 2025, most students changing schools or levels of study must provide a new Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) or Territorial Attestation Letter (TAL) unless exempt
What If You’re Late?
You may still apply to restore your status within 90 days. But this comes with:
An additional $229 restoration fee
No ability to study until your new permit is approved
Other Considerations
You must remain actively enrolled and in good standing at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI)
Off-campus work remains capped at 24 hours per week (as of 2025)
If you plan to leave and re-enter Canada during the extension process, make sure you have:
A valid travel document (visa or eTA)
A valid study permit or a letter of approval
Final Tip
This isn’t the time to assume “it’ll work out.” If you’re deferring, transferring schools, or behind in your program, you need to act early and by the book. Study permit extensions are unforgiving if you miss a step.
If you’re unsure whether your LOA is still valid, need a new attestation letter, or want help preparing your extension, consult an authorized representative.
