What I brought with me to Canada

I’ve been fascinated by the idea of borrowed ancestors for a while now, especially for Black immigrants. Seeing how we come here and lose our specificity. I mean we all become just Black. It doesn’t matter where you are from.

You are just Black.

In that same vein, I’ve wondered how we then try to hold onto some form of our heritage. Language and food seems to be an easy answer. But what else? Because even those two elements undergo some change as we settle into Canada and make it home.

This piece was an attempt to find what keeps us whole inside while we celebrate being “Black.”

Canada’s obsession with job numbers is killing its future

Some damning stats; the standard of living of the average Canadian declined by 2% between 2020 and 2024, only 18.2% of Canadian businesses own any form of intellectual property, the OECD predicts that real GDP per capita in Canada will fall for the third consecutive year in 2025.
