Who’s eligible to study in Canada without a study permit?
On February 19th, 2026, IRCC updated the operational instructions under which a foreign national can study in Canada without a study permit. As is wont to happen these days, there have been a ton of half-truths flying around, especially from private colleges.
For you to study in Canada without a study permit, you must meet these two conditions:
The duration of the course or program is six months or less; and
The course will be completed within your period of stay authorized upon entry into Canada.
The “upon entry” refers specifically to the period of authorized stay granted when the individual initially entered Canada. It does not refer to a later extension of status, maintained status after applying for renewal, or a new work permit issued from inside Canada.

What does it mean to belong in Canada?
Canada isn’t perfect, but it’s a good country. However, Victor Neagu argues that we would have better outcomes as a society if we can manage to muster our laws, institutions and society to view Canadian belonging, rather than pure immigration numbers, as the final outcome.
True belonging in immigrant populations drives ambition and challenges complacency and questions the status quo. Isn’t that what we all want for Canada?
