#23. Immigrants should get involved in building Canada's future
Your voice counts.
Hello hello,
How’s your week going? Mine has been topsy-turvy but in a good way. Or rather I chose to see it as good.
In today’s newsletter: Shilan Zade thinks immigrants should get involved in building Canada’s future.
Plus: Dikachi Chizim explores what it’s like to raise a child as an immigrant parent.
Also: It took Kristina McPherson 11 years to feel at home in Canada.

It’s election season in Alberta, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nunavut, Yukon, and Quebec
So, it’s probably a good time to re-listen to Shilan Zade’s episode on why we immigrants need to get involved in building Canada’s future. You don’t have to run for office.
You could volunteer. You could go vote if you’ve become a citizen. You could join a party.
Because if you moved here for a brighter future for yourself or your kids (if you have kids), isn’t that enough reason to get involved in building that future? Because the bright future isn’t going to magically appear.
It has to be built. Brick by brick.

It takes a village to raise a child
Immigrant parents rarely have that village.
says she and her husband’s running “joke” since they became a family of four is:“If we have any more kids right now, we’d have to move back to Nigeria.”
And I really felt that deep in my gut. The double whammy of trying to find your footing in your new home while also making sure the kids are alright is something.
Or as Dikachi says in the article: “There’s the internal battle of knowing you are raising them in this beautiful, efficient country where we have everything except the people who matter most.”

It took Kristina McPherson 11 years to feel at home
So maybe give yourself some grace if you still get strong strong feelings of being the “other.” I have lived in Calgary for four years now, and I just started feeling like I belong to this city a few months ago.
I literally started noticing how the city blooms in spring this year.

What am I excited about?
Have you taken the newcomers archetype quiz? If you have, could you please share it with a fellow immigrant? Or please share your result on LinkedIn like Tobi Adesanya did here.
