What if what you are feeling isn't homesickness but migratory grief? Because you know, moving to a new country is akin to losing a loved one.
You lose a familiar way of life. You lose friends and family (yes, you can call them on Whatsapp but it's not the same). You also lose your social status because you have to start rebuilding your career from scratch most times.
I sat down with the academic who's done the most work on this subject and coined the term, Professor Joseba Achotegui of Universidad de Barcelona to understand what migratory grief means, the seven griefs of migration he's identified, what extreme migratory grief looks like, and the signs that someone is struggling with migratory grief.
