How do you tailor your grant application for different funders?

In part 1 of Mina’s entrepreneurship playbook, we’re talking grants.

Grants are a big big part of Calgary’s entrepreneurship ecosystem. For most newcomers, these funding opportunities can be a great way to raise money for their business.

Especially because we lack the legendary FFF (friend’s, family, and fools ) round when starting out.

Mina and I chat about:

  • What wins and kills your grant applications

  • How Alberta’s provincial funding works

  • Quick wins you can act on within the next 30 days

Dozie’s Notes

A few things that stuck with me as I listened through our conversation:

  1. Loans aren’t the only answer, even if that’s what you knew back home. Many newcomers default to bank loans because that’s a path we know too well. But grants, SR&ED tax credits, and non-dilutive funding are also great alternatives. Plus, they aren’t debt.

  2. Winning grants isn’t about having the best idea. It’s about showing the funder that their objectives and your objectives overlap. Once you can articulate that intersection clearly, there’s a high probability that you get the grant. But remember to apply early.
